85. Daniel Buchholz

Category: Gallerist
Nationality: German
Last Year: Reentry (80 in 2005)
Daniel Buchholz is a steady force in the artworld. Coming from a family of book dealers, he opened his gallery in Cologne 20 years ago, and has worked ever since with an impressive and very particular stable of artists, many of whom had their first shows with him: Tomma Abts, Cosima von Bonin, Cerith Wyn Evans, Isa Genzken, Jack Goldstein, Henrik Olesen and Wolfgang Tillmans among them. For years he refused to expand his gallery to Berlin, but under pressure from artists wishing for representation in the new art capital, he finally relented, opening a second space in very bourgeois Fasanenstrasse, a further sign of blazing his own trail to the art market.
