Mera and Don Rubell are Miami’s first couple of art collecting, celebrated for helping put the city (where the Rubell Family Collection, open to the public, is housed) on the artworld map. They began collecting in the mid-1960s and now have one of the world’s premier contemporary art collections, boasting work by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cindy Sherman, Charles Ray, Jeff Koons and Paul McCarthy, to name but a fraction. Their parties during Art Basel Miami Beach are legendary, and works from their collection are frequently loaned to major institutions. In the last year they have forged a partnership with the Palm Springs Art Museum, which kicked off with a show of the Rubells’ Keith Harings.
