76. Thaddaeus Ropac
Category: Gallerist
Nationality: Austrian
Last Year: Reentry (78 in 2005)
Thaddaeus Ropac is one of Europe’s foremost blue-chip gallerists. At his space in Salzburg, which he opened in 1983, and one in Paris, which opened seven years later, he consistently mounts shows by a roster of high-calibre artists, including Gilbert & George, Georg Baselitz and Alex Katz. He has also been instrumental in supporting the Austrian art scene, representing artists including Gerwald Rockenschaub and Arnulf Rainer. Described as both dapper and discreet by France’s Le Figaro, Ropac maintains a standing in the artworld that is as quietly assured as he seems to be.
