73. Jerry Saltz
Category: Critic
Nationality: American
Last Year: 79
This year Jerry Saltz has set out to prove that art critics still matter by turning criticism into something of a performance art. He recently challenged talk show host Glenn Beck to curate a show of ‘degenerative art’ in New York, for example, in a counter-swipe at the weeping TV demagogue and his frequent attacks on the artworld. Saltz has promised he will secure a top-rate venue and reviews (Beck doesn’t seem impressed, though). Saltz meanwhile was inundated with support for a viral Facebook campaign he initiated that lamented the underrepresentation of women artists in major institutional collections. And now he has been nominated for a writing award at Rob Pruitt’s performance-based artwork, the First Annual Art Awards, at the Guggenheim.
