64. Emmanuel Perrotin
Category: Gallerist
Nationality: French
Last Year: 64
The ‘French Gagosian’ has had a mixed year. Forced to mothball his Miami outpost in January, Perrotin earlier announced the formation of a production company, Artists’ Dreams, to build on the Paris dealer’s success in finding backers to realise large works (eg, Piotr Uklanski’s 1996 Untitled (Floor Dance)). The first major project announced under these auspices (investors take a percentage of the dealer’s cut, its size determined by how long the work takes to sell), Xavier Veilhan’s epic sculptural array for Versailles, opened in September. Last November Damien Hirst reignited his relationship with Perrotin after 19 years; a show is planned for April. And with the comparably bankable Takashi Murakami’s self-portraits recently gracing his gallery walls, this gallerist seems to be doing just fine.
