58. Richard Serra
Category: Artist
Nationality: American
Last Year: 33
Last year Hal Foster discerned a ‘late style’ that ‘combines simplicity and grandeur’ in Promenade (2008), Richard Serra’s staggering, staggered parade of metal uprights for Paris’s Grand Palais. This year, alongside memorable shows of disorienting new sculptures at Gagosian in London and a retrospective of drawings at the Kunsthaus Bregenz, the American received an unlikely accolade: Out-of-round X (1999), a work on paper featuring an abyssal black hole, graced the cover of drone-metallers Sunn O)))’s Monoliths and Dimensions (2009). Well, who’s more heavy metal than Serra? Seventy this month, the ‘man of steel’ remains indisputably the leading sculptor of his generation.
