50. Massimiliano Gioni
Category: Curator
Nationality: Italian
Last Year: 78
This year Massimiliano Gioni outdid previous achievements (cocurating Manifesta in 2004 and the Berlin Biennale in 2006, for instance) by helping define a generation. At New York’s New Museum, where he’s director of special exhibitions, the debonair Italian co-organised The Generational: Younger than Jesus, featuring 50 artists from 25 countries. Under thirty-three, making art and not included? Consider yourself out. And while Gioni himself – who in spare moments is artistic director of Milan’s Trussardi Foundation – is, at thirty-five, comparatively wizened, he’ll still be the youngest ever director of the Gwangju Biennale when he organises the 2010 edition.
