41. Eugenio López

Category: Collector
Nationality: Mexican
Last Year: Reentry (47 in 2007)
Eugenio López, sole heir to Jumex, one of the world’s largest drinks companies, has spent the last 20 years putting contemporary Mexican art on the map. Among his achievements: a collection of nearly 2,000 works, soon to move to a David Chipperfield-designed building in the centre of Mexico City; early and consistent support for artists such Gabriel Orozco and galleries such as Kurimanzutto; and a curatorial programme which has brought Tate’s Jessica Morgan and Philippe Vergne (now director of Dia), among others, to his private museum. And as anyone who’s been to his openings can attest, he does it all with supreme panache. If you haven’t been, a selection of works from the collection are on show at Vienna’s MUMOK.
